Composting Notes

May 20th, 2008

Last week I attended a composting seminar sponsored by Penn State Master Gardeners. They had a lot of great info, not to mention a super deal! It cost $5, which basically covered the usage of the space (a local church hosted the event). And then just for attending we all received a free Earth Machine composter!

I took a slew of notes while I was there and decided to post them in a new Resources section I’ve created. Enjoy!

Ramping Up

May 5th, 2008

I took a couple days off of work (ending today) in order to spend some time with the family and get some more gardening work done around the house. Overall we got a lot done, but what easily stands out in my daughters’ minds was the planting. We are in the process of ramping up our garden for a bountiful summer!

So far we have peas in the ground and just starting to pop through the surface of the soil. We have a few different seeds started inside, but this weekend we made some more progress outside: we planted onions and potatoes.

The girls absolutely loved being outside and working. I taught them what it meant to “hill potatoes” as well as the basics such as staying on the paths and not walking on the freshly planted vegetables. I’ve got to believe that giving kids an early start on ownership and a sense of accomplishment helps them out. I was thrilled to see the looks of satisfaction blossom on their faces right in front of me.
